Radon gas is a colorless, odorless, radioactive carcinogenic gas that comes from the rock below our homes. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer - second only to smoking. While all homes have some level of radon, some tend to accumulate it in greater quantities than others and can even vary greatly from one side of the street to the other. In fact, some of the highest levels in NC have been detected in very close proximity (same street) as those with very low levels.
We have tested homes with elevated radon throughout the Triangle such as in Chapel Hill, Hillsborough, Cary, Apex, Raleigh, Pittsboro, Mebane, Burlington, Morrisville and Durham.
We use high quality electronic CRM devices (Sun Nuclear) calibrated annually.
Elevated radon has been detected in homes in every one of North Carolina's 100 counties.
Elevated Radon is estimated by the NC DHHS to result in the deaths of over 450 residents each year.
Does My Home Have Radon?
Yes. All homes have some level of radon as does the air outside our homes. As levels increase, however, so too do the carcinogenic risks.
How Do I Know The Radon Level?
The only way to tell what the radon levels are in the home is by testing. We are certified to test for radon using Sun Nuclear electronic testing devices for a minimum of 48 hours.
Can It Be Fixed and Is This Something You Do?
Yes. Fortunately most homes can be readily fixed to reduce levels below the EPA threshold of 4.0pCi/l. Fixing the home is usually very cost-effective and often can be less than $1800.
No. We are not a remediation firm as we feel it is a conflict of interest to test and offer remediation - we only test and consult.
Our Agent Says "Don't Worry About Radon"
Your agent is not well-informed and this advice is definitely not in your best interest. No one can tell which homes or areas have elevated radon risks without testing. We adhere to the EPA guidelines to test all homes and your agent should know to do so as well. With the testing costs usually under $150, it simply does not make sense not to test.
